Great Dane History

The Great Dane is also known as the Danish Hound and German Mastiff. This breed entered the Guinness World Records for being the world's tallest dog. The history of these animals is still speculated. Dogs looking like Great Danes can be traced back to Greek coins in 36 BC. They are also believed to have origins in Egypt and Rome. The modern Great Dane is believed to have been around for 400 years. It is likely that this breed originated in Germany as a cross between the English Mastiff and the Irish Wolfhound. More recently, Great Danes have become a part of popular culture with the creation of Hanna-Barbera's Great Dane cartoon character, Scooby-Doo.

Great Dane's Appearance

The Great Dane is considered a large (giant) dog with a variety of coat colorst—the six most common are fawn, brindle, blue, black, harlequin, and mantle. There is a considerable difference between the male and female. The male is noticeable larger than the female, while females usually have a longer body. The Great Dane's head is rectangular (long and narrow), and its body is muscular. Great Dane dogs' most distinctive features are their very straight legs. Sometimes the ears are cropped.

The Great Dane is known as a gentle giant; although Great Dane dogs are large, they are harmless. The Great Dane is sweet and loveable. Great Dane puppies are playful and patient with children. The Great Dane is a friendly outgoing dog breed that is very well suited for a family or a home with children. The Great Dane is perfect for any family. This dog will be fine living in an apartment as long as he is active outdoors, as they need their exercise. Their wonderful temperament make them easy to train, and they are also good watchdogs. Although they are large they are gentle and they get along with everyone; they don't use their size to intimidate.
